Val Cenis is a year-round mountain destination, offering two distinct seasons, each with its own atmosphere and experiences. The best time to visit Val Cenis depends on what you want from the mountains. For skiing, the slopes are scheduled to open from mid December to mid April, and the quietest weeks with good snow are usually in January and from 8 to 25 March. For hiking, mountain biking and the Lac du Mont-Cenis, come in July or August, when the summer lifts run and every high road is open. Here is what we tell our guests before they book.
Val Cenis month by month
Temperatures are Météo-France averages (1991–2020) for the Val-Cenis Termignon station at 1,280 m, just down the valley from Lanslebourg. Expect colder conditions on the upper slopes.
Winter in Val Cenis (December to April)
From Christmas through April, Val Cenis transforms into a charming alpine resort, ideal for families and mountain lovers. With reliable snow conditions, wide open slopes and a relaxed village atmosphere.
Winter is the main event in Val Cenis. The ski area links Lanslevillard, Lanslebourg and Termignon, with 125 km of pistes between 1,300 m and 2,800 m and a vertical drop of 1,500 m. Its 65 runs (17 green, 21 blue, 22 red and 5 black) are served by 29 lifts.
Snow and altitude
Three things work in Val Cenis’s favour:
- The slopes largely face north, which keeps the snow cold for longer.
- On the Italian border, the resort benefits from « retours d’Est », which the tourist office describes as a very localised weather phenomenon that brings heavy snowfalls.
- Natural snow is backed up by snowmaking: nearly 240 snow cannons cover the Lanslebourg and Lanslevillard sectors, and the tourist office notes that production is linked to the area’s existing hydroelectric installations.

Busiest and quietest weeks in winter
Val Cenis welcomes families from France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK, so crowds follow four school calendars at once.
- Busiest: Christmas and New Year, then 13 February to 1 March 2027, when two French zones overlap with British, Dutch and Belgian holidays.
- Quietest: the opening week (12–18 December), most of January, and 8 to 25 March 2027.
- Late season: from 26 March to 16 April, spring holidays in the UK, Flanders and two French zones bring families back, but it is rarely as busy as February.
Skiing with beginners and children
Val Cenis is a gentle place to learn. Beyond the nursery areas, beginners can move on to L’Escargot, a 10 km green run that follows the Col du Mont-Cenis road, closed to traffic in winter. The tourist office’s ski-area page on valcenis.com calls it « Europe’s longest green run ». Confident skiers head for the top lifts at 2,800 m, with views over the Lac du Mont-Cenis and Italian Piedmont. Non-skiers can use pedestrian lift passes, snowshoe trails and the toboggan run.
Summer in Val Cenis (July and August)
During the summer months, from June to September, Val Cenis reveals a completely different side of the mountains. Summer swaps snow for green pastures, high lakes and the trails of the Vanoise National Park. The season is short and intense, so July and August are the months when everything is open.
Lifts, hiking and mountain biking
The Vieux Moulin gondola and the Solert chairlift at Lanslevillard run from July to August, Sunday to Thursday, 10am to 4.30pm (closed Fridays and Saturdays). They carry walkers and mountain bikers to marked hiking and enduro trails.
Vanoise refuges are staffed from mid-June to mid-September, ideal for a lunch stop or a night at altitude.
The Lac and Col du Mont-Cenis
Above Lanslebourg, the road climbs to the Col du Mont-Cenis (2,083 m) and its vast lake on the Italian border. In winter, this same road becomes the L’Escargot ski run. It is usually open to traffic from mid-May until November, so the lake is an easy drive or bike ride from Les Alpages de Val Cenis residence all summer.
Practical tips by season
- Book early for school holidays: Christmas and February weeks fill first. If your dates are flexible, January and mid-March offer the widest choice of apartments.
- Buy ski passes in advance: Val Cenis offers early-booking discounts on ski passes.
- Winter tyres or chains: From 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027, every vehicle in Savoie must have four 3PMSF winter tyres or carry chains or snow socks for at least two driving wheels.
- Spa days at Les Alpages de Val Cenis: Our heated outdoor pool is closed on Saturdays (changeover day), so plan your swim for the other six days.
Your base at Les Alpages de Val Cenis
Whatever the season, Les Alpages de Val Cenis puts you close to the action. Our four-star residence of five chalets sits in Plan des Champs, Lanslebourg, about 100 m from the pistes, the ESF ski school and the childcare facilities. A free shuttle links Lanslebourg and Lanslevillard. Apartments sleep 2 to 8. After the mountains, guests unwind in the heated outdoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, hammam and fitness room. Covered parking, a concierge service and a pet-friendly policy make life easy for families and groups.
